Prisons: New Realities, New Missions

July 16, 2015 @ 5:00 am - 7:00 pm

The executive director of Boys to Men, Inc., the Rev. Dr. Nolan Shaw will engage us in an informative discussion about the new realities surrounding incarceration. An adjunct professor at McCormick, Rev. Shaw will focus on the “timeline of mass incarceration” in the U.S. and the way political clout was leveraged to maintain social control over impoverished people of color.  The discussion will highlight the impact of the war on drugs, the privatization of prisons, the involvement of media companies and the manipulation of hip-hop music to sustain prison profits. In addition, Rev. Nolan will share the response of faith-based communities to the plight of the incarcerated, the formerly incarcerated and their families.  Dinner will be served at 5 p.m. followed by the discussion. RSVP to Rev. Nanette Banks
